is
a live/work/exhibition space in Denver, Colorado's Santa Fe Art District. This opportunity provides each resident artist a
private bedroom along with a personal studio at a low cost allowing artists to advance their work while engaging with a small community of
exciting artists.
The residency is currently located in a rustic brick house built in 1900. Studios are
suitable for various 2-D art work, digital art, and small scale sculpture. Each resident artist has access to the gallery
for a portion of the year to show new work or curate exhibitions. Residents share a communal kitchen (which acts as a central
hub for the household), a washroom, and an onsite laundry facility. In warmer weather the south-facing front porch offers
a place to research, relax, and socialize outdoors.
Showpen is conveniently within walking distance to galleries, coffee shops, restaurants
and more. Some nearby hotspots include the Center for Visual Arts, Vertigo Art Space, Museo De Las Americas, Black Book Gallery,
Yellow Feather Coffee House, Interstate Kitchen, and Renegade Brewery. Showpen is also a short bus or car ride from Denver’s
RINO (River North) Art District and other downtown art venues.
Residents have found employment as adjunct faculty at
nearby universities such as Metro State University of Denver, CU Boulder, and Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design. Residents
have also worked at local museum institutions such as the Clyfford Still Museum, The Denver Art Museum, and the Museo De Las
Americas.
A primary benefit of living in Denver is having access to both city amenities as well as the
inspiring natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains. Showpen is an hour and a half from national parks, ski resorts, camping,
hiking, mountain climbing, and other activities or sites.
In 2013 Showpen partnered with Artplant.
The Artplant resident is fully funded; residing at Showpen while creating at TANK studios with assistance
from Demiurge. To learn more about Artplant visit http://www.artplnt.org/
The name Showpen humorously refers to equine culture, and notions of "the American
West", creating a metaphor for the artist/studio/exhibition relationship where the artist acts autonomously as a quasi trainer
perfecting their art before presenting it to the larger public arena.
